Civic Fabrication investigates the ‘civic’ as an architectural design challenge.Now in our third year of investigation, we interpret ‘tectonics’ as the careful assembly of site, programme and matter, forming a coherent identity. This assembly is informed by three concurrent strands of investigation; the abstract, inspired by a work of art; the urban, fabricating stories of Dalmarnock’s future, and the inhabited; the programme of our civic building, a Further Education College.This book publication is the second of two by this group of students: thefirst dealing with their abstract ‘Casting Call’. What makes ‘place’, and how do we effectively communicate an architectural idea to a community? In the course of a 12-week semester, and in the summer following their assessment, students meet and work with members of the Dalmarnock community, local professionals, and those whose economic or political position are shaping the future of the area. Students learn that the architectis but one player in a complex web of agents with diverse motivations and abilities. Our first-hand experience underlines the importance of collaboration and of understanding future use and users.The studio challenges students to comprehend, establish and articulate civic presence in a depressed context, void of coherent identity.
